PRRX1. also known as PRX-1 or MHox, plays critical roles in embryonic development, particularly in regulating mesenchymal cell differentiation, craniofacial morphogenesis, and skeletal muscle formation. It is characterized by a conserved homeodomain that facilitates DNA binding and interaction with co-regulators to modulate gene expression. In adult tissues, PRRX1 is implicated in maintaining stem cell populations and tissue repair processes, with dynamic expression observed in contexts like wound healing and organ regeneration.

Research highlights PRRX1's dual role in cancer biology. It acts as a tumor suppressor or promoter depending on the cancer type and context—for example, promoting epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and metastasis in certain carcinomas while suppressing proliferation in others.
