The SLC17A1 gene encodes a member of the solute carrier family 17 (SLC17), which primarily functions as a sodium-dependent phosphate transporter. This protein is implicated in the transport of inorganic phosphate and other organic anions across cellular membranes, particularly in renal and intestinal tissues. SLC17A1 is also associated with vesicular glutamate transport in certain cell types, suggesting a role in neurotransmitter regulation.
