The MRPL20 antibody is a tool used to detect and study the mitochondrial ribosomal protein L20 (MRPL20), a component of the mitochondrial ribosome's large subunit. Mitochondrial ribosomes are distinct from cytoplasmic ribosomes and are essential for translating mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)-encoded genes, which primarily produce subunits of the electron transport chain (ETC) complexes critical for oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). MRPL20. encoded by nuclear DNA, is part of the protein machinery imported into mitochondria to assemble functional ribosomes. Dysregulation of mitochondrial ribosome components, including MRPL20. has been linked to mitochondrial dysfunction, which underlies various diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic syndromes, and cancer.

The MRPL20 antibody is widely used in research to investigate mitochondrial protein synthesis, ribosome biogenesis, and cellular energy metabolism. It enables techniques like Western blotting, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry to assess MRPL20 expression levels, subcellular localization, and interactions.
