MMP12 (Matrix Metalloproteinase 12), also known as macrophage metalloelastase, is a member of the zinc-dependent endopeptidase family. It is primarily secreted by macrophages and plays a critical role in extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling by degrading elastin, fibronectin, and other structural proteins. MMP12 is implicated in inflammatory processes, tissue repair, and pathological conditions such as emphysema, atherosclerosis, and cancer metastasis. Its overexpression has been linked to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) due to elastolytic activity damaging lung tissue, as well as plaque instability in cardiovascular diseases.

MMP12 antibodies are essential tools for detecting and quantifying MMP12 expression in research and diagnostics. They enable the study of MMP12's localization, regulation, and interaction with substrates or inhibitors through techniques like Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and ELISA.
