The KRT40 antibody targets keratin 40 (KRT40), a member of the keratin family of intermediate filament proteins crucial for maintaining structural integrity in epithelial and hair follicle cells. Keratins are categorized into type I (acidic) and type II (basic), forming heteropolymers that provide mechanical stability to cells. While KRT40 is less characterized compared to other keratins like KRT5 or KRT14. it is implicated in specialized epithelial structures, including hair and nails. Its expression may vary across tissues, suggesting roles in tissue-specific differentiation or stress response.

Antibodies against KRT40 are primarily used in research to study epithelial biology, hair follicle development, and keratin-related disorders. They enable detection via techniques such as immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF), and Western blotting. In clinical contexts, abnormal keratin expression is linked to diseases like epidermolysis bullosa or certain carcinomas, making KRT40 a potential biomarker. However, limited studies on KRT40 necessitate cautious interpretation, emphasizing the need for antibody validation using controls like knockout models or siRNA.
