The MAP1LC3C (microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 gamma) antibody is a crucial tool for studying autophagy, a conserved cellular degradation process. LC3C, a mammalian homolog of yeast Atg8. is one of three LC3 isoforms (LC3A, LC3B, LC3C) involved in autophagosome formation. Unlike LC3A/B, LC3C exhibits distinct functional roles, including selective autophagy pathways and non-canonical autophagy processes such as LC3-associated phagocytosis (LAP) or entosis. It undergoes post-translational lipidation (conversion from LC3C-I to LC3C-II) during autophagosome membrane elongation, serving as a marker for autophagic activity.

LC3C antibodies are widely used in techniques like Western blotting, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry to detect LC3C expression, localization, and lipidation status. These antibodies help researchers investigate LC3C-specific roles in physiological processes (e.g., immune response, cellular homeostasis) and diseases like cancer, neurodegeneration, and infections. Notably, LC3C is implicated in tumor suppression and immune modulation, making it a therapeutic target in oncology. However, cross-reactivity with other LC3 isoforms must be carefully validated to ensure specificity. High-quality LC3C antibodies are essential for distinguishing its unique functions from those of LC3A/B in autophagy-related studies.
