CYP46A1. also known as cholesterol 24-hydroxylase, is a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily responsible for metabolizing cholesterol in the brain. It catalyzes the conversion of cholesterol into 24S-hydroxycholesterol, a key step in maintaining cholesterol homeostasis within the central nervous system. This enzyme is predominantly expressed in neurons and plays a critical role in regulating brain cholesterol turnover, as the blood-brain barrier limits cholesterol exchange between the central nervous system and peripheral circulation. Dysregulation of CYP46A1 has been implicated in neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and multiple sclerosis, making it a target of interest for both diagnostic and therapeutic research.

CYP46A1 antibodies are immunological tools designed to detect and quantify the expression, localization, and activity of this enzyme in biological samples.
