The solute carrier family 18 member A1 (SLC18A1), also known as vesicular monoamine transporter 1 (VMAT1), is a transmembrane protein responsible for transporting monoamines—such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine—into synaptic vesicles for storage and subsequent release. It plays a critical role in regulating neurotransmitter signaling in both the central nervous system and neuroendocrine cells. SLC18A1 is expressed in the adrenal medulla, stomach, and specific brain regions, functioning in acidic intracellular compartments to couple monoamine uptake with proton gradients.

Antibodies targeting SLC18A1 are essential tools for studying its expression, localization, and function in physiological and pathological contexts. They are widely used in techniques like Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence to investigate protein levels in tissue samples or cellular models.
