The CHRNA5 antibody targets the α5 subunit of the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR), encoded by the *CHRNA5* gene. This subunit forms pentameric ligand-gated ion channels, primarily in the central and peripheral nervous systems, mediating synaptic signaling. CHRNA5-containing receptors (e.g., α4β2α5) are implicated in nicotine addiction, cognitive function, and neuropsychiatric disorders. The α5 subunit modulates receptor sensitivity and calcium permeability, influencing neurotransmitter release and synaptic plasticity.

Genetic variations in *CHRNA5*, such as the rs16969968 SNP, are linked to increased nicotine dependence and lung cancer risk, highlighting its clinical relevance. CHRNA5 antibodies are critical tools for studying receptor expression, localization, and function in tissues. They enable techniques like Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry, aiding research on addiction mechanisms, neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s), and cancer biology. In diagnostics, these antibodies may help assess CHRNA5 expression patterns in tumors or neurological conditions. Therapeutic applications are also explored, as modulating α5-containing receptors could offer strategies for smoking cessation or neuroprotection.
