PLA2G12A (phospholipase A2 group XIIA) is a secreted phospholipase A2 enzyme encoded by the PLA2G12A gene. It plays a role in lipid metabolism, particularly in regulating lipoprotein remodeling and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) assembly. Unlike other phospholipases, PLA2G12A exhibits unique substrate specificity and is involved in modulating hepatic very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) secretion, linking it to lipid homeostasis and metabolic disorders. Research has associated PLA2G12A dysregulation with pathological conditions, including viral hepatitis, atherosclerosis, and cancer. Notably, its overexpression in hepatocellular carcinoma suggests a potential role in tumor progression and microenvironment modulation.

PLA2G12A antibodies are tools used to detect, quantify, or inhibit this protein in research and diagnostic contexts. They enable studies on PLA2G12A’s enzymatic activity, cellular localization, and interactions with lipid substrates or receptors. In virology, such antibodies help investigate PLA2G12A’s interaction with hepatitis viruses and SARS-CoV-2. as the enzyme may influence viral entry or replication. Therapeutic applications are under exploration, with antibody-based strategies targeting PLA2G12A’s pro-inflammatory or lipid-modifying functions. However, challenges remain in developing highly specific antibodies due to structural similarities within the phospholipase family. Ongoing research aims to clarify PLA2G12A’s dual roles in lipid signaling and disease pathogenesis, positioning it as a biomarker or therapeutic target for metabolic and inflammatory disorders.
