The PFKFB1 antibody targets the protein encoded by the PFKFB1 gene, a member of the 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2.6-bisphosphatase (PFKFB) family. PFKFB1 is a bifunctional enzyme that regulates glycolysis and gluconeogenesis by controlling intracellular levels of fructose-2.6-bisphosphate (F2.6BP), a potent allosteric activator of phosphofructokinase-1 (PFK-1) and inhibitor of fructose-1.6-bisphosphatase (FBPase-1). This dynamic balance influences cellular energy metabolism, particularly in tissues like liver and muscle. PFKFB1 exhibits both kinase and phosphatase activities, though its phosphatase activity predominates, favoring F2.6BP degradation and gluconeogenesis under certain conditions.

Antibodies against PFKFB1 are essential tools for studying its expression, localization, and function in metabolic pathways. They are widely used in techniques such as Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence to investigate PFKFB1's role in physiological and pathological contexts, including cancer, diabetes, and ischemia-reperfusion injury.
