The sequence of C-Peptide 1 (rat) contains 31 amino acids. Studies on the cellular effects of C-peptide have shown that it specifically binds to G-protein coupled membrane receptors within the range of nanomolar concentrations, subsequently activating Ca2 dependent intracellular signaling pathways. This leads to stimulation of Na-K-ATPase and endothelial nitric oxide synthase activity. Administration of C-peptide to streptozotocin induced diabetes rats resulted in a significant increase in systemic glucose conversion.
