有氯化氢气味，具溶解性。加热则挥发，约在430℃时升华。在水中分解成氧氯化铋，能溶于盐酸、硝酸、无水乙醇、丙酮和乙酸乙酯。 制造铋盐，有机反应催化剂，高纯材料。 Bismuth(III) chloride may be used as a catalyst in the following processes: · Alcoholysis, acetolysis and hydrolysis of epoxides to form the corresponding β-alkoxy and β-acetoxy alcohols and diols. · Preparation of thiiranes from oxiranes using ammonium thiocyanate. · Three component coupling of carbonyl compound, amine and dialkyl phosphite to form α-amino phosphonates. · Allylation of secondary benzyl alcohols with allyltrimethylsilane. · [4 + 2] cycloaddition between dienes and α-carbonyl ethylenic dienophiles.
