5-Amino-4-oxopentanoic acid is a non-protein amino acid that plays a rate-limiting role in heme biosynthesis.

5-Amino-4-oxopentanoic acid (5-ALA) enhances the immune response of L. vannamei to V. parahaemolyticus, upregulates immune- and defense-related genes, and enhances aerobic energy metabolism, respectively[1].
