GLP-1是由肠道L细胞产生的主要肠促胰岛素激素之一。它以活性形式（7-37）/（7-36）酰胺分泌，但会被酶DPP4迅速切割，形成代谢产物GLP-1（9-37）/（9-36）酰胺。尽管两种活性形式显示出相同的生物活性，但在人体循环中的GLP-1主要以酰胺化形式存在。
