Usage
Chemical intermediate, principally a chemical intermediate for vanadium alloys & compounds, oxidation catalyst in many industrial synthesis processes, catalyst in manufacture of sulfuric acid (contact process), oxidation catalyst in automobile catalytic converters, additive to glass for screening uv radiation.

First Aid Measures

Ingestion
If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately.
Inhalation
Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
Skin
Get medical aid immediately. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.
Eyes
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid immediately.

Storage
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances.
Handling
Wash thoroughly after handling. Wash hands before eating. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Do not ingest or inhale.

Hazards Identification

Inhalation
May cause respiratory tract irritation. May cause effects similar to those described for ingestion. May cause lung damage. May cause asthma and shortness of breath.
Skin
May cause skin irritation. May cause skin sensitization, an allergic reaction, which becomes evident upon re-exposure to this material.
Eyes
May cause eye irritation. May cause conjunctivitis.
Ingestion
May be fatal if swallowed. May cause central nervous system effects. Symptoms include excess salivation, vomiting and diarrhea. High concentrations may cause drowsiness, convulsions, unconsciousness and central nervous system damage.
Hazards
Container may explode in heat of fire. When heated to decomposition, it emits acrid smoke and fumes of vanadium oxides. Material is not flammable but it may increase the intensity of the fire when in contact with combustible materials. Avoid chlorine trifluoride; lithium; peroxyformic acid; and calcium, sulfur, water complexes.

Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166. Skin: Wear appropriate protective gloves and clothing to prevent skin exposure. Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to minimize contact with skin.
Respirators
Wear a NIOSH/MSHA or European Standard EN 149 approved full-facepiece airline respirator in the positive pressure mode with emergency escape provisions.
Exposure Effects
Neurologic disorders, including nervous depression, psychiatric disturbances, and tremors have been seen in connection with exposure to vanadium pentoxide. Vanadium pentoxide has been shown to be teratogenic in the hamster and mouse.
