First Aid Measures

Ingestion
If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid.
Inhalation
Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid.
Skin
Get medical aid immediately. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.
Eyes
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid immediately.

Handling and Storage

Storage
Store in a tightly closed container. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances.
Handling
Wash thoroughly after handling. Use only in a well ventilated area. Minimize dust generation and accumulation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Avoid ingestion and inhalation.

Hazards Identification

Inhalation
May cause respiratory tract irritation. Methemoglobinemia is characterized by dizziness, drowsiness, headache, breath shortness, cyanosis with bluish skin, rapid heart rate and chocolate-brown blood. This product contains nitrite which may cause methemoglobinemia.
Skin
Causes skin irritation.
Eyes
Causes eye irritation.
Ingestion
Harmful if swallowed. Causes gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause methemoglobinemia, cyanosis, convulsions, and death. Methemoglobinemia is characterized by dizziness, drowsiness, headache, breath shortness, cyanosis with bluish skin, rapid heart rate and chocolate-brown colored blood. May cause allergic reaction.
Hazards
Containers may explode when heated.

Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Personal Protection
Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166. Skin: Wear appropriate protective gloves to prevent skin exposure. Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin exposure.
Respirators
Follow the OSHA respirator regulations found in 29CFR 1910.134 or European Standard EN 149. Always use a NIOSH or European Standard EN 149 approved respirator when necessary.
Exposure Effects
Respiratory depression secondary to hypoxia may occur. CNS depression is secondary to hypoxia from methemoglobinemia. DNT was NOT teratogenic in rats, and had no effects in a 3- generation study in rats. Testicular effects have been seen in laboratory animals, but not in exposed workers.
Exposure limit(s)
TLV: ppm; 1.5 mg/m3 (as TWA) (skin) (ACGIH 1996).

Fire Fighting Measures

Flash Point
131
Fire Fighting
Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. To extinguish fire, use water fog, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or regular foam.
Upper exp. limit
8.2
Lower exp. limit
1.4
Fire Potential
Dinitrotoluenes may burn but do not ignite readily. Combustible: moderate fire hazard.

Accidental Release Measures

Small spills/leaks
Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable disposal container. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Provide ventilation.

Stability and Reactivity

Incompatibilities
Oxidizing agents, reducing agents, strong bases, mixture with nitric acid is highly explosive, ignites on contact with sodium oxide.
Stability
Stable under normal temperatures and pressures. There are instances of explosion during manufacture or storage. May explode when heated.
Decomposition
Nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide.
Combustion Products
Emits toxic fumes of oxides of nitrogen May explode when exposed to heat or flame.
