First Aid Measures

Ingestion
If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid. Get medical aid immediately. Wash mouth out with water.
Inhalation
Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid.
Skin
Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes.
Eyes
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.

Handling and Storage

Storage
Store in a cool, dry place. Store protected from moisture.
Handling
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with eyes. Do not ingest or inhale.

Hazards Identification

Inhalation
May cause effects similar to those described for ingestion. May cause respiratory tract irritation.
Skin
May cause skin irritation.
Eyes
May cause eye irritation.
Ingestion
May cause central nervous system depression, characterized by excitement, followed by headache, dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea. Advanced stages may cause collapse, unconsciousness, coma and possible death due to respiratory failure. May cause effects similar to those of acute inhalation.
Hazards
Flash point data for this chemical are not available; however, it is probably nonflammable.

Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Personal Protection
Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166. Skin: Wear appropriate gloves to prevent skin exposure. Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to minimize contact with skin.
Respirators
Follow the OSHA respirator regulations found in 29CFR 1910.134 or European Standard EN 149. Always use a NIOSH or European Standard EN 149 approved respirator when necessary.
Exposure Effects
Chronic ingestion may cause effects similar to those of acute ingestion. Prolonged exposure may cause mental changes such as hallucinations, depression, psychosis, and possibly coma.
Poison Class
3

Fire Fighting Measures

Fire Fighting
Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. Substance is noncombustible. Extinguishing media: Use extinguishing media most appropriate for the surrounding fire. In case of fire use water spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or appropriate foam.

Accidental Release Measures

Small spills/leaks
Sweep up, then place into a suitable container for disposal. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Provide ventilation. Do not expose spill to water.

Stability and Reactivity

Stability
Stable under normal temperatures and pressures.
Incompatibilities
Strong oxidizing agents; strong acids; heavy metal salts Reacts violently with bromine trifluoride.
Decomposition
Hydrogen bromide, oxides of potassium.
