Skin
Remove contaminated clothing and wash exposed area thoroughly with soap and water. A physician should examine the area if irritation or pain persists. Note: see treatment of dermal exposure in the main body of this document for complete information.

Eyes
Irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of tepid water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation, or photophobia persist, the patient should be seen in a health care facility. Note: see treatment of eye exposure in the main body of this document for complete information.

Handling and Storage
Storage
Keep in a cool, dry, dark location in a tightly sealed container or cylinder. Keep away from incompatible materials, ignition sources and untrained individuals. Secure and label area. Protect containers/cylinders from physical damage.

Hazards Identification
Inhalation
Cough, dyspnea, and tightness in the chest be delayed in onset after exposure. A flu-like condition similar to metal fume fever (cadmium pneumonitis) may develop. Severe and potentially fatal pulmonary edema may develop. Death may occur within one week. Nonlethal exposures may cause residual effects of pulmonary fibrosis.

Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
Personal Protection
Dispensers of liquid detergent should be available. In the laboratory, gloves and protective clothing should always be worn but should not be assumed to provide full protection. Carefully fitted masks or respirators may be necessary when working with particulates or gases, and disposable plastic aprons might provide additional protection. Protective clothing should be of distinctive color, as a reminder not to be worn outside the laboratory.

Respirators
Self contained breathing apparatus with a full facepiece operated in pressure demand, or other positive pressure mode or a combination respirator which includes a type-c supplied air respirator with a full facepiece operated in pressure demand, or other positive pressure, or continuous flow mode, and an auxillary self contained breathing apparatus operated in pressure demand or other positive pressure mode.

Exposure Effects
Inhalation of cadmium fumes can cause cadmium fume fever with headache, vertigo, and shivering. Systemic effects from inhalation may include hallucinations or distorted perceptions. Low birth weights have been reported in one occupational study. Embryo- and fetotoxicity have been reported in rats and mice. Cadmium is a suspected male reproductive hazard.

Fire Fighting Measures
Fire Fighting
(Non-Specific -- Cadmium Compound) Keep upwind; keep out of low areas. Wear self-contained (positive pressure if available) breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.(Non-Specific -- Cadmium Compound) For small fires, use dry chemicals, carbon dioxide, water spray, or foam. For large fires, use water spray, fog, or foam.

Fire Potential
Non-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes.

Accidental Release Measures
Small spills/leaks
(Non-Specific -- Cadmium Compounds) Do not touch spilled material. Stay upwind; keep out of low areas. Take up small spills with sand or other noncombustible absorbent material and place into containers for later disposal. Take up small, dry spills with clean shovel and place into clean, dry container. Dike far ahead of large spills for later disposal.
