Usage
Vitreous or fused silica is used as laboratory glassware in chemical laboratories and in the semiconductor industry; thin-film dielectric coating in integrated circuits; electric-resistance furnaces and radiant heaters, and protection of precious-metal themocouples; as a refractive optical material, used for prisms, camera lenses, cells, solar cell covers, spacecraft windows, and other optical components; in mirror blanks of astronomical telescopes; as a component of laser optics; as an envelope material for mercury-vapour and incandescent tungsten-halogen cycle lamps; as a chromatography substitute, inert filler or as a coating material in the investment-cast industry; insulation or packing material.

Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
Personal Protection
Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166. Skin: Wear appropriate gloves to prevent skin exposure. Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to minimize contact with skin.

Respirators
A respiratory protection program that meets OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.134 and ANSI Z88.2 requirements or European Standard EN 149 must be followed whenever workplace conditions warrant a respirator's use. Wear a NIOSH/MSHA or European Standard EN 149 approved full-facepiece airline respirator in the positive pressure mode with emergency escape provisions.

Fire Fighting Measures
Fire Fighting
Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Extinguishing media: Substance is noncombustible; use agent most appropriate to extinguish surrounding fire. Use agent most appropriate to extinguish fire.

Accidental Release Measures
Small spills/leaks
Clean up spills immediately, using the appropriate protective equipment. Sweep up, then place into a suitable container for disposal. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Provide ventilation.
