Esters formed from triethanolamine and higher fatty acids are widely used as detergents, emulsifiers, wetting agents, and lubricants, as well as in the formulation of cosmetic fragrances. Triethanolamine is also used as a preservative and waterproofing agent, analytical reagent, and solvent. As an activator in nitrile rubber polymerization, it can also be used as an emulsifier and stabilizer for oils and waxes under acidic conditions, and as a softener for textiles. It is one of the components of spinning oil for synthetic fibers such as polyester.
