Applications of Methyl tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE)
Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is a clear, flammable liquid with a high octane rating and excellent blending properties. It is primarily used in the fuel industry, but also finds applications in chemical synthesis and industrial solvents.

1.Fuel Additive (Octane Enhancer)
MTBE is widely used as a gasoline additive to increase the octane number and improve combustion efficiency. It helps reduce engine knocking and enhances fuel performance, especially in reformulated gasoline (RFG).
2.Oxygenate for Cleaner Combustion
As an oxygen-containing compound, MTBE promotes more complete combustion of fuels, thereby reducing carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbon emissions from vehicles.
3.Chemical Intermediate
MTBE serves as a feedstock in the production of high-purity isobutene (isobutylene), which is further used to produce polyisobutylene, butyl rubber, and other specialty chemicals.
4.Industrial Solvent
Used as a solvent or extractant in chemical processes, MTBE offers good solvency for organic compounds and is sometimes used in pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries.
