Tenofovir disoproxil is an antiretroviral drug used for the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS and chronic hepatitis B. The active substance is tenofovir, and tenofovir disoproxil is a prodrug, which is used for its better absorption in the intestinal tract. Tenofovir is a defective adenosine nucleotide that selectively inhibits the action of reverse transcriptase while only weakly interfering with mammalian DNA polymerase α, β and mitochondrial DNA polymerase γ. Tenofovir prevents the formation of 5' to 3' phosphodiester bonds necessary for DNA chain elongation.
