Appearance and character: strong acid, pKl=1.5; pK2=3.5. Produces dark purple with aqueous ferric chloride. It can be oxidized by bromine and potassium permanganate and does not react with phenylhydrazine. Similar in nature to carboxylic acid, it can form salts with bases, esters, acyl chloride, amides and mixed acid anhydrides.
