Formula: C8H15NaO2
Sodium octanoate is a chemical substance with the formula C7H13COONa. The following is an introduction to the properties, uses, preparation methods, and safety information of sodium octanoate:
Nature:
-Appearance: Sodium octanoate is a white crystalline powder, commonly in the form of anhydrous or monohydrate crystals.
-Solubility: Sodium octanoate is soluble in water, but not in organic solvents.
Usage:
-Ionic soap: Sodium octanoate can form soap with alkali metal ions or alkaline earth metal ions, and is commonly used as a dispersant and emulsifier in materials such as paints, coatings, and adhesives.
-Surfactant: Due to its excellent surface activity, sodium octanoate can be used to prepare detergents, shampoos, and body cleaning products.
-Food additive: Sodium octanoate can be used as an acidity regulator and antioxidant in food to maintain freshness and quality stability.
-Other uses: Sodium octanoate can also be used to prepare pesticides, dyes, and cosmetics.
Method:
There are usually two methods for preparing sodium octanoate:
1. Caprylic acid neutralization method: React octanoic acid with sodium hydroxide to produce sodium octanoate and water.
2. Octyl ester hydrolysis method: Octyl ester reacts with sodium hydroxide to produce sodium octanoate and alcohol.
