Silane Coupling Agent Series
Composition:Structural formula:
Use the classic structure as:Y(CH2)nSi(OR)3
OR in the figure refers to the hydrolysable group-Alkoxy,for example, methoxy,ethoxy. The alkoxy group can react with the added or residual water on the surface of the inorganic substance to hydrolyze into a hydroxyl group, and then these hydroxyl groups will undergo condensation reaction with the hydroxyl group on the surface of the inorganic substance to remove a water molecule and form a strong chemical bond.
Y in the figure refers to an organic functional group.such as amino, methacryloxy, epoxy, vinyl.mercapto, etc :Different organic functional groups are suitable for different organic polymers. It can chemically react with the polymer (thermosetting) or form a physical entanglement or interpenetrating network system (thermoplastic) to form a strong chemical bond.

Performance and Application:
1,Silane coupling agents have unique chemical and physical properties, which not only enhance the bond strength, but more importantly,prevent the bond dissociation on the interface of the composite material during aging and use.
2.The coupling agent gives the ability to bind stably between two different difficult to bond surfaces. In composite materials, choosing the right silane can greatly increase the bending strength (tensile strength and modulus) of the composite material,while enhancing the material's resistance to humidity and other vicious environmental conditions.
3,Other advantages that silane coupling agents can provide include:
Better wetting properties of resin
Anti-humidity and dewatering agent
Building waterproof
Better dispersibility of mineral fillers
Make plastic clearer and transparent
Usage:
1.It can be used to bond inorganic fillers and plastics to polymers,optimize polypropylene manufacturing. crosslink polyethylene, and produce thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVS).
2.It also be used to produce white carbon black reinforced rubber for "green" tires.
The reaction mechanism of silane on inorganic materials
Silane coupling agents containing three inorganic reactive groups (usually methoxy, ethoxy or acetyl) on the silicon atom can bind the metal hydroxyl groups of most inorganic materials well , especially the structure contains silicon, aluminum or heavy metal materials. By reacting with added or residual water on the inorganic surface, the siloxy group on the silicon atom is hydrolyzed into silanol, and then the silanol reacts with the metal hydroxyl on the inorganic surface to form an alkoxy structure and remove water. Silanes can also be combined with each other to form a multi-molecular structure of the silane coupling agent, usually more than one layer or equivalent of silane is used on the surface, this will form a dense siloxane layer on the surface of the inorganic material and make the inorganic surface farther away from the interface.

Reaction mechanism of silane to polymer
The combination of silanes to organic polymers is very complicated The reactivity of the thermosetting polymer should match the reactivity of the silane. For example,epoxy silane or amino silane will combine with epoxy resin,amino silane will combine with phenolic resin,the methacrylic silane will combine with styrene cross-linked the unsaturated polyester resin.For thermoset polymers whose reactivity plays an important role, the matching of chemical structures will improve the physical properties of composite materials. The reaction of silane and resin generally has the following three forms:1.Graft
2.Chemical bond
3.Copolymerization
For thermoplastic polymers, the bonding achieved by the silane coupling agent can be interpreted as the formation of inter-diffusion and interpenetrating network systems in the interface region Therefore,for thermoplastic resin, the compatibility of silane and resin is very important. Matching the solubility parameters of the two materials will help increase the probability of forming practical composite with the best performance.
