Chemical properties of phenacetin
White glossy flake like crystals or white crystalline powder. Melting point 137-138 ℃,
refractive index 1.571.m Hardly soluble in water, slightly soluble in ether, slightly soluble in boiling water,
soluble in ethanol and chloroform. When dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid, it does not show color,
but when nitric acid is added to the solution, it turns orange yellow.
No odor, slightly bitter taste.
Use of Phenacetin
1. Antipyretic Analgesic, used to treat fever, headache, Neuralgia, etc.
The ingredients include APC tablets, analgesic mixture, and aspirin and caffeine.
Phenacetin is reasonably considered to be a human carcinogen;
Analgesic mixtures containing Phenacetin are listed as known human carcinogens.
