Neopentyl alcohol, or 2, 2-dimethylpropanol, is an organic compound that is a member of the alcohol family with the formula C5H12O or (H3C-)3C-CH2OH. It is an alcohol derivative of neopentane or C(CH3)4. It is a resinous crystalline solid that does not burn as easily as other alcohols, but it has a strong stimulus and should be used with extreme caution. It can be combined with bromine to form tribromo-neopentyl alcohol, which is used as a raw material for synthetic resin flame retardants.
