Ergothioneine (also known as L-sulfhydrothioneine, EGT). In 1909, Charles Tanret isolated it from ergot (ergot is the sclerotium of ergot fungus and ergot microcephalum of Clavicipitaceae family), hence the name. 1. A Powerful Antioxidant
For many years, Ergothioneine has been considered a highly effective low molecular weight antioxidant.
It is mainly consumed in the human body through daily diet and can accumulate in cells subjected to high levels of oxidative stress. Compared with Resveratrol, an antioxidant with high free radical scavenging capacity but low bioavailability, ergothione has higher bioavailability. This is mainly due to the biological characteristics of Ergothioneine and the presence of OCTN1 (Ergothioneine transporter) in human epidermal cells and tissues, which enables Ergothioneine to accumulate in the epidermis and the epidermal Stratum corneum.
It is worth noting that, unlike many water-soluble antioxidants such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, and polyphenols, Ergothioneine does not penetrate through the cell membrane and its function is limited to cells and tissues that possess OCTN1.

It can resist photoaging, inhibit DNA, protein, and lipid damage and cell apoptosis caused by ultraviolet radiation.
3. Other Functions
