Mupirocin Calcium
Definition:
Mupirocin Calcium is a calcium salt form of mupirocin, a topical antibiotic derived from Pseudomonas fluorescens. It is used to treat skin infections caused by bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.
Function:
Mupirocin Calcium works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, preventing the incorporation of isoleucine into proteins, which disrupts bacterial growth and replication.
Applications:
· Topical Antibiotic: Used for treating skin infections such as impetigo, folliculitis, and minor cuts or burns.
· Wound Care: Effective in preventing infection in surgical wounds and treating chronic skin conditions.
· Healthcare: Commonly applied in clinical settings for preventing and controlling hospital-acquired infections.
