Mifepristone
Definition:
Mifepristone is a synthetic steroidal compound used primarily as a medication for medical abortion and the management of certain reproductive health conditions. It works by blocking the action of progesterone, a hormone essential for maintaining pregnancy.
Function:
Mifepristone functions by binding to progesterone receptors, inhibiting the action of progesterone. This causes the lining of the uterus to break down, leading to the termination of a pregnancy. It also has other medical uses, such as in the treatment of Cushing’s syndrome and as part of a regimen for managing fibroids.
Applications:
1. Medical Abortion: Mifepristone is used in combination with misoprostol for medical abortions, effectively terminating early pregnancies (up to 10 weeks gestation).
2. Cushing’s Syndrome Treatment: It is used to treat Cushing’s syndrome by blocking cortisol production, helping to manage symptoms of the condition.
3. Uterine Fibroids: Mifepristone is sometimes used to shrink uterine fibroids and manage related symptoms, such as heavy bleeding.
4. Emergency Contraception: In some cases, mifepristone is used as an emergency contraceptive to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex.
