Methylamine is an organic compound with the formula CH3NH2, which is a derivative of ammonia formed when one of the hydrogen is replaced by a methyl group. Methylamine is the simplest primary amine. Commercially available products are generally methanol, ethanol, tetrahydrofuran or aqueous solutions, or stored under pressure as anhydrous gases in metal tanks. Industrial products are often transported by trailer after pressurizing anhydrous gases. It has a pungent, fishy smell.
Activity and application
Methylamine is a good nucleophile because it has little steric hindrance. It is widely used in organic chemistry. Some reactions with other simple reagents include: reacting with phosgene to produce methyl isocyanate, reacting with carbon disulfide and sodium hydroxide to produce sodium methyldithiocarbamate, and reacting with chloroform under alkaline conditions to produce isonitrile , react with ethylene oxide to produce N-methylethanolamine, etc.
Representative compounds produced from methylamine include the pharmaceuticals ephedrine and theophylline, the pesticides carbofuran, carbaryl, and sodium hexamethonium, and the solvents N-methylformamide and N-methylpyrrolidone. The preparation of some surfactants also requires the participation of methylamine in the reaction. [3]
Liquid methylamine can be used as a solvent similar to liquid ammonia. It is similar in some ways to liquid ammonia, but dissolves organic matter better (similarly, methanol is better than water as a solvent).
