- Lithium Aluminium Hydride-Tetrahydrofuran (LAH-THF) is a solution of lithium aluminium hydride (LAH) in tetrahydrofuran (THF), a common organic solvent.
- LAH is a powerful reducing agent that can reduce many organic compounds, such as ketones, aldehydes, esters, nitriles, etc.
- LAH has a molecular weight of 37.95 g/mol and a linear formula of LiAlH4.
- LAH is a white to gray powder with monoclinic crystals. It is stable below 120°C in dry air, but turns gray when exposed to moisture or aluminum impurities. It is hygroscopic and flammable.
- LAH melts at 190°C and decomposes. It reacts violently with water and alcohols, releasing hydrogen gas and forming lithium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide.
- LAH-THF solutions have different concentrations depending on the application. For example, 1.0 M, 2.0 M or 10% (w/w) solutions are available from Sigma-Aldrich.
- LAH-THF solutions are used for various organic synthesis reactions, such as the preparation of thermoplastic polyester polyamides from oleic acid, lithium-polymer batteries, hydrodefluorination of gem-difluoromethylene derivatives, asymmetric aldol reactions, and synthesis of Li-Al-N-H composites with hydrogen absorption/desorption properties.
