When furan is etherified, reduced, and then catalyzed by hydrogenation to obtain 2, 5-dimethoxy-tetrahydrofuran, it is hydrolyzed to produce butanedial, which is the raw material for synthesizing atropine, another alkaloid. Furan is also used to produce the anti-inflammatory drug sodium toluylpiroacetate, which consumes 4.75 tons of furan per ton.
