Etonogestrel is a synthetic form of the naturally occurring female sex hormone progesterone. Etonogestrel binds to cytoplasmic progesterone receptors in the reproductive system and subsequently activates progesterone receptor-mediated gene expression. Due to the negative feedback mechanism, the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) is inhibited, resulting in inhibited ovulation and changes in cervical mucus and endometrium. The first product that included etonogestrel was developed by Organon, a Merck subsidiary, and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2001.
