Menthol is a monocyclic terpene alcohol with three asymmetric carbon atoms in its cyclohexane ring resulting in (–) and (+) menthol, neomen thol, isomenthol and neoisomenthol. (–)-Menthol is the isomer that occurs most widely in nature and is the one commonly identified as menthol.
