Chloramphenicol, also known as Chloramphenicol, is a broad-spectrum antibiotic produced by Chloramphenicol that has inhibitory effects on bacterial growth. Natural chloramphenicol is a levorotatory form (also known as levofloxacin). The synthesized product is white or slightly yellow needle shaped or flake shaped crystals, odorless, extremely bitter in taste, slightly soluble in water, ether, and chloroform, easily soluble in methanol, alcohol, acetone, or ethyl acetate, insoluble in benzene and petroleum ether. It is relatively stable in neutral or weakly acidic aqueous solutions and is prone to failure when exposed to alkali. The synthetic product is a racemic form, also known as streptomycin. Chloramphenicol is a mixture of the left-handed and right-handed forms of chloramphenicol. Because the right-handed form has no antibacterial effect, the efficacy of streptomycin is only half that of natural products.
