Production method
1. Add solid KOH to cadmium iodide (CdIn aqueous solution of I2), amorphous Cd(OH)2 precipitates; Heat it to dissolve. The hot solution is left standing and slowly cooled, that is, white Cd(OH)2 crystals are precipitated.
2. Cd(OH)2 microcrystals can be prepared by adding slightly excessive hot sodium hydroxide solution without carbonate into hot cadmium nitrate solution. The precipitation is filtered, washed with distilled water boiled to remove CO2, and dried at 40 ~ 50℃ to obtain Cd(OH)2.
Use
It is used for making nickel-cadmium batteries, metal surface treatment and gas chromatography analysis.
Uses of Cadmium hydroxide: it is generated in storage battery anodes, in nickel-cadmium and silver-cadmium storage batteries in its discharge. The hydroxide is used in place of cadmium oxide for variety of operations.
Ni(OH)2 + Cd → Cd(OH)2 + Ni
