Butyrylcholine iodide (BChI) is a pharmacological agent that inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase and has inhibitory properties. It can be used as a fluorescent probe to detect esterase activity in biological samples. BChI binds to acetylcholine and blocks the action of cholinergic neurotransmitters, which are responsible for muscle contraction, transmission of nerve impulses, and other important functions in the brain. The target enzymes for BChI are esterases, which are involved in signal peptide hydrolysis, transfer reactions involving choline and phosphatidylcholine, and chlorogenic acids.
