Boric acid is a crystalline compound of boron trioxide dissolved in water, which is an inorganic acid, mainly tetraboric acid H2B4O7(also known as pyroboric acid), metaborate acid (HBO2)n and normal boric acid H3BO3(also known as primary boric acid). Boric acid has the most water content and is the most stable. Boric acid is also referred to as boric acid, the appearance of white powder crystals or triclinic axial scaly crystals, shiny. It has a slightly bitter taste. Slippery in contact with skin. Odorless, soluble in water, ethanol, glycerin, ethers and essential oils, the aqueous solution is weakly acidic, boric acid is heated to 70-100℃ and gradually dehydrated into metaborate acid, 150℃-160℃ into pyroboric acid, 300℃ into boric anhydride (B2O3). Boric acid is toxic to humans. Solubility in water: 2.77 at 0℃, 3.65 at 10℃, 4.87 at 20℃, 5.74 at 25℃, 6.77 at 30℃, 8.90 at 40℃, 11.39 at 50℃, 14.89 at 60℃, 23.54 at 80℃, 38.00 at 100℃. Aqueous solutions are weakly acidic, typically Lewis acids, which promote solubility in water in the presence of hydrochloric, citric, or tartaric acid. Therefore, it can be purified by recrystallization.
Application:
1 Used as pH regulator, disinfectant, antibacterial preservative, etc.
2 Boric acid can be used in capacitor manufacturing and electronic components industry, high purity analytical reagents, medicinal disinfection and anti-corrosion and preparation of exposed photosensitive materials washing processing liquid.
3 Used in glass, enamel, ceramics, medicine, metallurgy, leather, dyes, pesticides, fertilizers, textiles and other industries.
4 Used as chromatographic analysis reagent, also used in the formulation of buffer.
5 It is widely used in glass (optical glass, acid-resistant glass, heat-resistant glass, glass fiber for insulating materials) industry, which can improve the heat resistance and transparency of glass products, improve mechanical strength, and shorten the melting time. In the enamel and ceramic industry, it is used to enhance the luster and fastness of enamel products, and is also one of the components of glazes and pigments. As an additive and cosolvent in metallurgical industry, especially boron steel has high hardness and good rolling ductility, and can replace nickel steel. Boric acid has preservative properties and can be used as a preservative, such as wood preservative. 6 It is used in metal welding, leather, photography and other industries, as well as in the manufacture of dyes, heat and fire resistant fabrics, artificial gems, capacitors, cosmetics. It can also be used as insecticide and catalyst. In agriculture, boron micronutrient fertilizer has fertilizer effect on many crops, can improve crop quality and increase yield. Boric acid is also one of the basic raw materials for the production of other borides, and the boron compounds produced by it are widely used in national defense and other industrial departments and scientific research units.
