Dimethyl mercaptan, named 1, 1-dimethyl mercaptan according to the Chinese Chemical Society, is an organic compound that is also the main component of truffle flavor and is commonly used as a synthetic fragrance added to products such as truffle oil.
Methyl mercaptan can be synthesized by condensation of methyl mercaptan and formaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid.
