Benzoin, also known as benzoin, diphenylolone, 2-hydroxy-2-phenylacetophenone, or 2-hydroxy-1, 2-diphenylacetophenone, is a colorless or white crystal with a camphor-like odor that is used as a raw material for drugs and wetting agents, and as a catalyst for the production of polyester. Benzoin is formed by condensation of two molecules of benzaldehyde with benzoin in an ethanol solution of hot potassium cyanide or sodium cyanide. Benzoin is a chiral molecule with a pair of mirror isomers (R) -Benzoin and (S) -benzoin.
