Product Description
Benzoic acid an organic compound of aromatic acids, the simplest of the aromatic acids, having the formula C7H6O2. Originally made from benzoin gum, so called benzoin acid. Melting point 122.13 ºC, boiling point 249.2 ºC, relative density (15/4 ºC)1.2659. The appearance is white needle-like or scale-like crystal. Sublimation occurs above 100 ºC. Slightly soluble in cold water, hexane, soluble in hot water, ethanol, ether, chloroform, benzene, carbon disulfide and turpentine, etc.
Benzoic acid is widely found in nature in the form of free acids, esters or derivatives. Mainly used for the preparation of sodium benzoate preservative, and for the synthesis of drugs, dyes; It is also used to make plasticizer, mordant, fungicide and spice. It can be prepared by direct oxidation of toluene in the presence of manganese dioxide; Or decarboxylation of phthalic anhydride with water vapor.
