Pure ammonium sulfate is a white crystalline substance that begins to decompose into ammonia and ammonium bisulfate when heated to 100 ℃. The by-products have a slight yellow or gray color, low moisture absorption, and are not easily clumped, making them relatively easy to store and soluble in water, but insoluble in ethanol and acetone. Ammonium sulfate is a physiologically acidic and quick acting nitrogen fertilizer, which is generally suitable for crops such as wheat, corn, rice, cotton, sweet potato, hemp, fruit trees, and vegetables. For soil, ammonium sulfate is most suitable for neutral and alkaline soils, but not for acidic soils. It is also used as an analytical reagent (precipitant, masking agent), supporting electrolyte in electrochemical analysis, microbial culture medium, and ammonium salt preparation.
