Ore introduction
Albite, a common feldspar mineral, is sodium aluminum silicate (NaAlSi3O8). It is most common in pegmatites and felsic igneous rocks such as granite, is also found in lower-grade metamorphic rocks, and is found as authigenic albite in some sedimentary rocks. Albite typically forms brittle, glassy crystals of various colors. It can be used to make glass and ceramics, but its main significance is that it is a rock-forming mineral.
Albite is the sodic end-member mineral of the plagioclase solid solution series and the alkaline feldspar series. It has a triclinic structure, in which silicon and aluminum are tetrahedrally coordinated, forming large vacancies (i.e., lattice positions), which are mainly occupied by cationic sodium. Although all silicon and aluminum atoms occupy tetrahedral positions in this structure, the specifics of their positions vary. The distribution of silicon and aluminum atoms is highly ordered at low temperatures, but at a high temperature of about 1100°C, the distribution of atoms is much disordered.
Physical and chemical properties
The chemical formula of albite is: Na2O·Al2O3·6SiO2. Its theoretical chemical composition is Na2O: 11.8%; Al2O3: 19.4%; SiO2: 68.8%. The appearance of albite is generally white or off-white, with a hardness of 6-6.5 and a density of It is 2.61~2.64 g/cm3, and the melting point is about 1100℃. It is difficult for natural albite minerals to reach their theoretical values. The closer the chemical composition of feldspar is to its theoretical value, the purer and better the quality of the feldspar. During the heating process, the theoretical melting point of albite is 1100°C. The melting point of natural albite ore varies with different chemical compositions.
Main feature
Albite has the following characteristics:
1. It melts quartz, clay, and mullite quickly at high temperatures and has high solubility.
2. Low melting temperature and good transparency.
3. The melting temperature range is narrower than that of potassium feldspar, the melt viscosity at high temperature is smaller, and it changes rapidly with temperature.
Main application
In addition to being used as an industrial raw material, albite minerals account for more than 30% of the ceramic industry's usage, and are also widely used in chemical and other industries.
1. Glass solvent: Feldspar is one of the main components of the glass mixture. Feldspar contains high alumina and low iron content, which can reduce the amount of alkali. In addition, the process of feldspar turning into glass after melting is relatively slow, and its crystallization ability is small, which can prevent crystals from precipitating during the glass formation process and damaging the product. Feldspar can also be used to adjust the viscosity of the glass. Generally, potassium feldspar is used in various glass mixtures. Or albite.
2. Ceramic body ingredients: Before firing, feldspar can act as a barren raw material, reduce drying shrinkage and deformation of the body, improve drying performance, shorten drying time, and can be used as a flux to fill the body during firing. Making the green body dense and reducing voids can also improve the light transmittance of the green body.
3. Ceramic glaze: makes the glaze soft and lowers the melting temperature of the glaze.
4. Enamel raw materials: Enamel is mainly blended with feldspar and other mineral raw materials, and the blending amount is usually more than 20-30%.
5. Others: Potassium and albite can also be used as high-quality raw materials for the production of chemical fertilizers.
Instructions for use
Albite is generally suitable for low temperature ceramics:
1. Before firing, feldspar is a non-plastic raw material like quartz, which can shorten the drying time of the green body and reduce drying shrinkage and deformation.
2. Feldspar is the main flux raw material in the base glaze, such as feldspathic porcelain. Feldspar accounts for about 25% of the base body and about 50% of the glaze. Its main function is to reduce the firing temperature of the base glaze.
3. Feldspar melts into feldspar glass at high temperature, fills between the body particles, and can dissolve other minerals, such as kaolinite, quartz, etc., making the body dense, which helps to improve the mechanical strength and electrical properties of the product. and translucency.
4. Albite has a greater effect than potassium feldspar in lowering the firing temperature of the glaze, and at the same time it can increase the translucency of the product, but the firing temperature range is not as wide as that of potassium feldspar.
5. Requirements for feldspar in ceramic production:
a. The contents of K2O and Na2O are as high as possible, and the contents of colored oxides Fe2O3 and TiO2 are as low as possible;
b. The content of SiO2 should be in the range of 63%-68%, and the content of Al2O3 should be in the range of 17%-23%;
c. The CaO content in feldspar should not be too high. If the content is too high, the sintering temperature of the blank will be easily reduced, and the fluidity of the glaze will be affected if it is used in the glaze.
