Preparation:
Add butanaldehyde (30g, 0.42mol), 5% sodium hydroxide aqueous solution (15mL) and ethanol (50mL) into 250mL three-way bottle for synthesis of 2-ethyl-2-enhexal, stir in a water bath at 40℃ overnight, test the reaction with TLC, spin steam to remove ethanol, extract it three times with 100mL ethyl acetate, incorporate organic layer, wash with pure water, and remove the ethanol. Salt water was washed, anhydrous magnesium sulfate was dried, filter and spin dried to obtain a light yellow clear liquid (13.8g, yield 52%).
To synthesize 2-ethyl-2-enhexyl alcohol, add 2-ethyl-2-enhexal (5g, 40mmol), sodium borohydride (3g, 80mmol), anhydrous methanol (20mL) into a 100mL three-mouth bottle, stir and react at room temperature for 3h, add 10mL pure water under the condition of ice bath, extract with ethyl acetate, combine organic layer, and wash with pure water. The liquid was washed in saturated salt water, dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered, spun dry, and purified by column chromatography to obtain a colorless transparent liquid of 4.36g with yield of 85%.
(S) -2-ethylhexanol was synthesized by adding bisphosphor ligand ChenPhos(3.28mg,0.0021mmol),Rh(NBD)2BF4,(1.50mg,0.002mmol) and dichloromethanes (2mL) into a 10ml reaction tube under nitrogen atmosphere, stirring for 30 minutes. The yellow clarifying liquid obtained is the catalyst. 2-ethyl-2-enhexyl alcohol (25.6mg,0.2mmol) was added, then the inner tube was placed in a hydrogenation reactor, and the system was changed into a hydrogen atmosphere through three hydrogenation and venting operations, and finally pressurized to 50atm and stirred at room temperature for 20 hours. The reaction was stopped, the gas was released, the reaction system was distilled and concentrated, and the colorless oil liquid (25.2mg) was filtered through the silica gel column, the yield was 97%, 98.3%ee.

Dioctyl phthalate produced from octyl alcohol is the main plasticizer of PVC, and the consumption of PVC accounts for about 95% of its total consumption.
