Description:
The shikimic acid pathway is an important metabolic pathway that exists in plants, fungi and microorganisms. The pathway has 7 enzymatic processes. Dehydroquinic acid (DHQ) and shikimate dehydrogenase (SDH) promote the third and fourth stages of the shikimate pathway. In most microorganisms, DChemicalbookHQ and SDH are monofunctional, but in plants DHQ and SDH can fuse to form an enzyme with two functions. The advantage of the DHQ-SDH bifunctional enzyme is to increase the efficiency of metabolic logistics by limiting the quality of intermediates in the competitive pathway in the shikimate pathway.
Uses:
Naturally occurring (-)-form is a major biosynthetic precursor of phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan and hence of the majority of plant alkaloids. It is also involved in the biosynthesis of lignin, flavonpids and other important aromatic compounds.
