Present in the rhizomes of Veratrum album, this alkaloid forms colourless prisms
from EtOH. It is dextrorotatory with [α]20D + 33.1° (c 1.87, pyridine). Hydrolysis
yields veratric acid and Zygadenine (q.v.).
