Morphothion is commercially produced through the esterification of dimethyl phosphorodithioic acid with a morpholinocarbonylmethyl thiol intermediate, forming a phosphorodithioate ester. The synthesis begins with the preparation of 2-(morpholin-4-yl)acetyl chloride, which is reacted with dimethyl phosphorodithioate under controlled conditions in an organic solvent such as toluene or dichloromethane. A base like triethylamine is used to neutralise the byproducts and drive the reaction to completion.
