Preparation by Fries rearrangement of 2-bromo-4- methyl-phenyl acetate, with aluminium chloride without solvent at 110° or in refluxing nitrobenzene (90%) with zinc chloride or boron trifluoride in nitrobenzene at 100° (80–85%) with ferric chloride or stannic chloride in nitrobenzene at 100° (55–70%).
